Our Program – Our Values

NEWPIN is a Centre based befriending and therapeutic network for mothers and young children with the primary focus of strengthening the mother and child relationship and parenting skills.  The program is aimed at assisting those parents who are experiencing significant difficulty in caring for their child or children.

NEWPIN was developed in the United Kingdom in response to the needs of young mothers experiencing issues such as social isolation, mental illness, family violence, social disadvantage, low self-esteem and those at risk of physically or emotionally abusing their children.

The program is based on strengths based practice.  This means that trained staff work collaboratively with members to identify their individual strengths and help them to use these strengths to bring about positive changes in their lives.

NEWPIN is underpinned by four key values that guide every interaction between participants:

Support

Equality

Empathy

Respect

Our Members

Many of our Members have been helped by coming to NEWPIN.  They are our strongest advocates.

Some of the common problems they shared were:

*                           Feelings of depression

*                           Being socially isolated, cut off from family and friends with no-one to turn to

*                           Feeling emotionally insecure and unable to trust others

*                           Experiencing difficulties in raising their children

*                           Unintentionally hurting their children, either physically or emotionally.

*                           Feeling like they’d lost their sense of identity since becoming a parent.

*                           Believing they had no worth or value as people.

Some typical comments include:

*                                 “Bringing up children is one of the hardest and most important jobs a person has to face in life, but society offers little help or training until something goes ‘wrong’”

*                                 “I felt numb, unable to enjoy my life or my child.  Since being at NEWPIN I have somehow come alive again and started to blossom and flourish almost from day one”

*                                 “I found it really hard to cope with a new baby and felt I’d failed terribly.  Others being honest about their experiences made me realise that being a good parent doesn’t come naturally”

Is NEWPIN for you?

Are you:

*                                       Ready to make positive changes in your life and relationships?
