About the Program

What is the NEWPIN approach?

NEWPIN provides training and support for vulnerable families so they may strengthen interpersonal relationships and bring about generational change.

All NEWPIN programs are in a domestic style building, offering a safe and stable, home-like environment for parents and children.  Each centre has a well-equipped playroom with a trained play facilitator, so children can enjoy their day as well as develop all-round skills.

The play facilitator works closely with parents to assist them to learn about their child’s strengths and areas that require development.

Each NEWPIN centre can be accessed by up to 25 families at any one time and members commit to attending at least twice a week.  Many attend up to four days and are involved in the program for around 12 -18 months.

The NEWPIN process consists of several elements providing members with many opportunities to develop knowledge and skills.

  1. Our Skills as Parents – a ten week program in which participants explore their feelings and share their knowledge around parenthood.  The aim is to improve parenting skills by building self-esteem, confidence and a deeper understanding of children’s needs.

  2. Weekly Therapeutic Support Groups – where members explore issues from their own lives that are impacting on their parenting.

  3. Keeping Children Safe – a six week program offering practical strategies designed to keep children safe and free from abuse and neglect

  4. The Family Play Program – an eight week program aimed at increasing understanding of the importance of creative play in a child’s development and assisting the parent/child attachment process.

  5. SEERS Program – explores the four core NEWPIN values of support, equality, empathy and respect in relation to a member’s personal life, the NEWPIN centre and society as a whole.

  6. Learning for Life – the NEWPIN Foundation Course prepares established members to befriend others.

  7. Regular Self Evaluation and Child Appraisal – where members are invited to identify and reflect on their own and their child’s progress with the coordinator/family worker/play facilitator.

The principal strength of NEWPIN is the collaborative approach to working with service users (known as members) and its four core values of support, equality, empathy and respect.  As a result, everyday interactions in the NEWPIN lounge room/playroom and support groups are characterised by mutual sharing, learning and support.
